Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness Facts

Size: Approximately 1.3 million acres. Over 1,200 miles of canoe routes, 15 hiking trails and 2,000 designated campsites.

Located: in the northern third of the Superior National Forest in northeastern Minnesota. It extends nearly 150 miles along the International Boundary adjacent to Canada's Quetico Provincial Park and is bordered on the west by Voyageurs National Park.

Designated Wilderness: The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness was federally designated under The Wilderness Act in 1964. In 1978, The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness Act was established to provide specific guidance for managing the million plus acres of the Superior National Forest.

OF SPECIAL INTEREST: National Geographic named the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness as one of “50 Destinations of a Lifetime.”
